Jean Barreau leads a spiritual commune on the countryside and promises his followers a chance for a second life. When their doubles arrive at the house, the followers learn that Jean meant his promise of a second life quite literally.

Dave Stimple, an unfocused mattress store owner, is having issues connecting with everyone around him. He arrives at the shop one morning to find the local health and safety people have shut him down. Bugs, huge bed bugs and lots of complaints are cited as the reason. Dave is really confused and his relationships with his wife, friends, and his own humanity seem to be devolving and increasingly distracting anomalies begin to take over his reality. As the border with Austria falls, everything changes in Hungary. The frontiers are open, as the new possibilities for Adam and Evelyn to decide in which world – Eastern or Western – they want to build a happy life. Adam und Evelyn is based on the homonymous novel by Ingo Schulze, translated in more than ten languages.
